Interesting facts about Nano Silver:

Nano Premium Silver (Ag+)

An activated carrier material, dotted with nano-silver particles sized <20 nm, available in:

The difference between Nano Silver and colloidal silver is that colloidal silver is cytotoxic (toxic to cells). Silver is hydrophilic, meaning it attracts water to itself. Because of the size of the silver ions in colloidal silver, it can penetrate through cell membranes, where the moisture (water) inside the cell binds to the silver ions. For this and other reasons, colloidal silver isn’t considered as safe, or effective as claimed. Nano Silver, due to the size of the activated carrier molecules, cannot penetrate cell membranes and is therefore “cell-friendly”. Studies also proved nano silver to be more effective than colloidal silver.

Long-term use of (colloidal) silver preparations can lead to argyria, a condition in which silver salts (ions) deposit in the skin, eyes, and internal organs, and the skin turns into an ashen-grey colour.” (Barret, 2005)

The scientific observed antiviral effects of silver nanoparticles are found to be due to the presence of actual nano-silver particles, rather than just to silver ions present in the solution. In fact, the antibacterial effect through silver ions only, inhibited HIV-1 with a therapeutic index 12 times lower than that of actual silver nanoparticles.” (Galdiero et al., 2011).

Compared to colloidal silver’s low concentrations in water, Nano Silver Ag+ have a relative total concentration of 8,6%-10% due to the increased surface area of the activated carrier molecules, rendering Nano Silver Ag+ very potent indeed. (Read further for an explanation of this)

Efficacy of Nano Silver

Silver is a natural antibiotic and has been used as an antimicrobial agent for centuries. It is effective against a broad range of pathogens such as bacteria (including methicillin and vancomycin-resistant strains), yeast, fungi, germs, viruses and protozoa. All pathogens are single cell anaerobic organisms. An anaerobic organism or anaerobe is any organism that does not require oxygen for metabolism. Instead their metabolic functions are dependent on a certain enzyme. Nano Silver’s effect is primarily to this enzyme.

The nano silver only affects pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, germs, etc.) due to their unicellular (anaerobic) metabolism.

“Good bacteria”, on the other hand, also known as obligate aerobes, or aerobic bacteria need oxygen. These aerobic bacteria (the good bacteria) thus only grow and multiplies in the presence of oxygen and do not have these enzymes needed by the anaerobic organisms. Nano Silver, attached to a larger carrier molecule, thus has no adverse effects on aerobic bacteria, humans, animals or plants.

People has since ancient times known that Silver has superior antibacterial, antibiotic and anti-viral characteristics, but there have been limitations on the application of Silver in real life, because of darkening of silver at high temperature, the high cost of silver and the administration of silver. Nanotechnology solved all these problems at the same time.

Nanotechnology is that of processing the material down to the nano meter range below 20nm. (1nm=1million millimetre). At below 20nm in size, Nano Silver combines with the cell walls of pathogenic micro-organisms and in the case of anaerobic organisms, it will then quickly combine with sulfhydryl (of oxygenic metabolic enzyme), which “deactivates” the pathogens by blocking the metabolism process – effectively suffocating the pathogen. In the case of viruses, nano silver also prohibits the virus to attach to the host cell. It has been proven that Nano Silver in this way inhibits the HIV-1 virus to infect body cells! Medical science fully understands exactly how and why silver is so effective in killing a wide range of microbial organisms, thus combating disease and infection. Scientific studies have shown that pure silver quickly kills pathogens. It even kills the super-bacteria that evolve after conventional disinfecting agents kill the weak strains of bacteria. Silver smaller than 20nm destroys a certain enzyme which is required by anaerobic bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi and algae. (Unfriendly bacteria tend to be anaerobic and friendly bacteria aerobic). The nano Silver acts as a catalyst and disables an enzyme that facilitates certain actions inside anaerobic cells. For one, it suppresses respiration, basal metabolism of electron transfer system, and transport of substrate in the microbial cell membrane. The nano silver thus effectively inhibits multiplication and growth of pathogens by stopping them from using the body’s own cells as vehicles for replication. Also, the nano silver literally rips holes in bacterial membranes and wreaks havoc on the inside. They bind to essential pathogen cell components (like DNA), preventing the bacteria from performing even their most basic functions. This is the action that destroys anaerobic bacteria. Moreover, bacteria with nano silver inside their cells, transmit (infects) the silver to other bacteria, making the pathogens an active carrier of the nano silver itself. Nano silver thus creates an environment that makes it impossible for pathogens to survive and multiply. The nano silver is not consumed in this process so it is available to keep working again and again.

Since the nano silver is not designed to combat a specific pathogen but rather works against the very nature of their life cycles, it is an effective preventative agent against all illnesses caused by all pathogens including future mutations. There is no known disease-causing organism that can live in the presence of even minute traces of nano silver. Here we see the essence of the pharmaceutical industry’s hatred of silver-based medical applications, in general, and nano silver. The antibiotics of the pharmaceutical industry are only effective against certain types of bacteria. In fact, nano silver is the officially recognized treatment for the Ebola virus outbreak in Sierra Leone. It even prevents the HIV and other viruses from binding to host cells. These findings were published by the US National Library of the National Institutes for Health, in the Journal of Nanobiotechnology. Multiple independent studies have shown it to be effective against killer viruses and stubborn bacteria like salmonella and listeria.

Nano-Silver is understandably also highly effective to kill fungi, yeast, algae, biofilm and protozoa by effectively disabling the enzyme that these unicellular organisms need for their metabolism. In a study by the University of Florida, it was found that Nano Silver particles was extremely effective in eliminating the phytophthora fungus, not only before it attacks the leaves and roots of everything from tomato plants to oak trees, but also in all stages of the fungus’ life cycle, without any adverse effect on the plant growth. (ScienceDaily, 2015). Silver Nano particles has also been proven extremely effective against powdery mildews on pumpkin and cucumbers (Lamsal et el., 2011). A study by the Department of Microbiology at Kyungpook National University in Daegu, Korea, tested Nano Silver against the Candida species of fungus (the chief culprit in women’s vaginal yeast infections and the more sinister chronic candidiasis syndrome) as well as the Trichophyton species (the most common cause of athlete’s foot, jock itch and ringworm), as well as hair and nail fungal infections in humans. The study proves that Nano Silver decimates Fungal Pathogens and that its effectiveness is superior to the most popular (potent) Anti-Fungal drugs (Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2008 Aug;18(8):1482-4). And in a study, published in the Journal of Biofouling, researchers demonstrated that antimicrobial silver not only has a profound antifungal effect, but is also effective in destroying the biofilms produced by these fungal pathogens. (Martinez-Gutierrez et al.,2013) (Biofilms allow fungal pathogens to adhere to cell walls and form tiny “fortresses” similar to plaque. This normally helps to protect the fungal pathogens from antifungal drugs, as well as from the immune system and from any other natural predators in the human body).

The core technology of “Nano-Silver” is the ability to produce silver particles smaller than 20nm and to distribute these particles very uniformly. At this scale the silver particles have extremely large relative surface areas, increasing their contact with viruses, bacteria and fungi many million times and so vastly improving its bactericidal and fungicidal effectiveness. And with the nano particles dotted on the surface of an activated carrier molecule, the surface area is thus increased several million times. This maximized surface enables the strong anti-pathogen effect, and this is achieved with very small amounts of silver. In addition, Nano Silver will not expire. Nano Silver Ag+ is fast acting, non-poisonous, Non-stimulating, Non-allergic, Tolerance free and Hydrophilic.

Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, nano-silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different from the enzymes of single-celled organisms. Thus, Nano Silver is absolutely safe for humans, warm and cold-blooded animals, plants, etc. (in fact all multi-celled living matter). Moreover, all these unicellular pathogens cannot mutate into silver-resistant forms, as happens with conventional antibiotics, and as such, no tolerance to nano silver would develop through mutation.

Nano silver has not been demonstrated to interact or interfere with any other medicines being taken. Inside the body, silver has no chemical reactions, does not dissolve or form any toxic compounds. It is a scientifically proven fact that silver inside the body in moderate quantities does not react with anything other than a pathogens’ oxygen-metabolizing enzyme. Nano silver therefore may truly be a safe, natural remedy for many of mankind’s ills. Nano silver has been reported by users to be both a remedy and a prevention for numerous infections, colds, flus, and fermentations due to various protozoa, parasites, bacteria, viruses or fungi.

Cleaning water and food sources:

Using the Nano Silver Effervescent Tablets, we have treated 500 litres of contaminated water from the Orange River and the irrigation canal system near Upington in the Northern Cape, as a control to test the Nano Ag+ Effervescent Tablets against pathogens such as E. coli and other Coliforms. In Vitro contamination was also done. Right before the Nano Ag+ Effervescent tablet was introduced to the water at a rate of 0.016% per volume, the E. coli count was >2500. Within 2 minutes after the introduction of Nano Premium Silver Ag+ to the water, 100% of all E. coli was dead and after 6 hours there were no pathogens count in the water. The Nano Ag+ tablet thus killed 100% of all pathogens in the water. The pathology results are attached to this paper (Pathcare Upington, Aug 2018, Specimen 18:IF0011296R).

Drinking Water:

Two other significant studies have shown nano silver to be highly effective in treating municipal drinking water. The latter study made use of nano silver coated filtration systems and found that, at a flow rate of 3l/h, the output count of E. coli was zero after 7h filtration, when the input water had a bacterial load of 103 colony-forming units (cfu) per millilitre (Heidarpour et al., 2011). In Tugulea et el.’s study, as published in “The Environmental Science and Pollution Research International Journal” (2014), they found that Nano-silver particles killed all pathogens within a 24-hour period and proofed to be stable in natural underground aquafers and surface water reservoirs for more than a year. A long lifespan of nano-silver particles in surface and natural water sources makes it more likely therefore that nano-silver particles will reach drinking water treatment systems in the near future. From the same study, nano-silver appears to be stable in chlorinated drinking water and in chloramine-treated drinking water for more than a week. That raises the possibility that nano-silver, introduced into finished drinking water obtained from a surface water source, may be stable enough to also reach end consumers.

Food Preparation and processing:

Farms, feeding lots, Food processing and food preparation facilities are all well aware of the dangers of contamination by pathogens in their industries, as the recent Listeria outbreak in South Africa proved well. The Listeria monocytogenes is a serious foodborne pathogen that can contaminate food during food processing, and it keeps on growing during the cold chain distribution process, as well as during refrigerated shelf-life. In an outbreak situation, such as recently happened in South Africa, if 100 people are infected, you can expect 30 or more to die from Listeria. It is found in soil, vegetation, water, sewage, livestock feed and feces. Basically, it is everywhere. It is also found in many foods, including fresh produce. What makes this pathogen especially dangerous is that it only grows below 5°C. It thus shrives in typical refrigeration temperatures and it does not affect the look, smell or taste of the contaminated food. Along with some other bacteria that is quite sensitive to nano silver, listeria is surprisingly sensitive to nano silver. In fact, it is no. 1 on the list of the nine pathogens most sensitive to nano silver, which easily kills listeria in only a couple of minutes!

Here is a list of the nine bacteria that is found to be easily killed (literally within minutes) by Nano Silver:

  6. Enterococcus Faecium (ATCC 11543)
  7. Rhinovirus (common colds)
  8. Rotavirus (infectious diarrhoea)
  9. Vancomycin-resistant-enterococci (VRE)

Study after study nowadays confirms the effectiveness of nano silver as an antipathogen.

“Only recently some studies have emerged showing that silver nanoparticles can be an effective antiviral agent against HIV-1, Hepatitis B virus, respiratory syncytial virus, herpes simplex virus type 1, monkeypox virus, influenza virus and Tacaribe virus.” (Galdiero et al., 2011, MDPI Open Access Journals, Molecules 16, 8894-8918; doi:10.3390)

“As a result of the survey we can conclude that (silver) nanobiotechnology is applicable at any stage of the fight against Salmonella” (Journal of Veterinary Medicine and Research 3(4), 2016: 1057)

“Due to the antibiotic resistance developed by the bacteria (S. Typhi) it is very hard to manage different types of antibacterial drugs. There is great need of agents to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. Silver nanoparticles have proven to have antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganism. The use of silver nanoparticles’ antimicrobial effects is highly sought after because of its broad-spectrum activity, high rate of effectiveness, and low cost.” (Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology, 2012, 3, 480-485)

Our study suggests that L. monocytogenes is sensitive to Nano Silver particles”. ”Nano Silver is effectively used against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhi, Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The studies indicated that Nano Silver’s antibacterial effect is independent of acquisition of resistance by the bacteria against antibiotics.” (Frontiers in Microbiology, 2016, 7, 307; International Food Research Journal, 2011, 18, 55-66)

Till now, the only scepticism towards nano-silver was the cytotoxicity of colloidal and nano silver. But with the latest technological breakthroughs of >500nm activated carrier molecules, such as Nano Premium Silver Ag+, the prediction is that nano silver treatments of water sources and food production facilities will soon be the norm, rather than the exception.

The Kansas State University did a study on post-harvest food safety in which they demonstrated conclusively that nano silver, when sprayed onto beef carcasses, destroys greater than 90% of the disease-causing microbes on the meat. Here is a quote from the study conducted by the Animal Science Food Safety Consortium (at Kansas State University):

“Treating beef flank with 32 ppm colloidal silver (Ag) solution had a bactericidal effect on Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli O157:H7, resulting in a greater than 90% reduction after 240 min. Samples inoculated at 104 log CFU/ml with Salmonella spp. or Escherichia coli O157:H7 and treated with 32 ppm nano silver demonstrated a 1.23 and 1.58 log10 CFU/cm2 reduction, respectively after 240 min when compared to untreated samples (P 0.05) Atomic Absorption Analysis of treated beef samples yielded residual nano Ag well below the Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA) allowance for 3 oz of red meat. Although not yet approved for use on foods, a nano silver rinse implemented during the carcass conversion and/or fabrication process could be an effective intervention technology against Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli O157:H7. And Listeria. Monocytogenes. (Aramouni, 2005)
